One of NTTO’s research programs is the Survey of International Air Travelers (SIAT), which captures the characteristics of international visitors traveling in the United States. The SIAT, along with the number of visitor arrivals to the United States (also produced by NTTO), is used by the Bureau of Economic Analysis to estimate travel exports, imports, and trade balances.
NTTO also produces 12 SIAT-based market profile reports that detail the characteristics of overseas visitors engaged in specific activities in the United States. One of these profiles is Package, which contains inbound traveler volume and select traveler characteristics of overseas visitors who purchased a travel package during their U.S. visit.
Below are some highlights of overseas visitors who purchased a travel package during calendar year 2024:
- Overseas visitors who purchased a travel package increased 21 percent from 2023 to 3.3 million accounting for 9 percent of all overseas visitors.
- Top source markets: Japan (661,000), the United Kingdom (558,000 visitors), China (274,000), India (217,000), and South Korea (197,000)
- Top ports of entry: New York (19 percent), Honolulu (14 percent), Los Angeles (12 percent), Miami (10 percent), and San Francisco (8 percent)
- Top U.S. states visited: New York (806,000), Florida (792,000), California (703,000), Hawaii (546,000), and Nevada (347,000)
- Main purpose of trip: vacation/holiday (76 percent), business (16 percent), and visit friends/relatives (4 percent)
- Top leisure activities engaged: sightseeing (84 percent), shopping (83 percent), national parks (29 percent), guided tours (28 percent), and historic locations (25 percent)
These and other characteristics are available annually from 2000 to 2024 on NTTO’s Research home page by going to the Travel Profiles program page and downloading the Market Profile: Package Excel report.
