Who’s Responsible?
Over the past year, we’ve explored a fundamental question: Who is responsible for preparing the next generation of travel professionals — industry or academia? The answer is both.
The Opportunity
As global travel evolves, so must how we prepare students. Yet tourism — especially the international inbound and tour operator sector — remains underrepresented in many university programs. This is not a critique. It’s an opportunity.
Moving from Conversation to Collaboration
At the International Inbound Travel Association (IITA), we believe building a globally aware, industry-ready workforce requires alignment between educators and industry professionals. We’re inviting you to help shape a more connected, effective pathway forward.

4. Participate in IITA Summit Student Program
IITA brings education to life through its IITA Summit Student Program. At the 2026 Summit in Niagara Falls, tourism and meeting planning students from Niagara University combined classroom learning with real-world experience. After completing the Inbound Insider: Steps to Success™ online course to build foundational knowledge of the travel trade, students participated on-site in hands-on activities — from shadowing event operations and managing registration to attending education sessions and engaging directly with inbound operators during buyer-seller appointments. The program provided academic credit, valuable industry connections, and exposure to a critical yet often overlooked sector of tourism.
Following its success, IITA will expand this initiative to future host destinations, with student programs planned for Birmingham, Alabama, in 2027 and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in 2028 — creating even more opportunities for students to connect with and learn from the inbound travel industry firsthand. If you are a university local to one of these future host cities and are interested in participating, please reach out.
