Announcing New Name: The American Indigenous Tourism Association

Public,

As of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, October 13, 2025, the American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association (AIANTA) will officially be known as the American Indigenous Tourism Association.

This change reflects their expanded, inclusive mission to support and promote tourism for all Indigenous communities throughout the United States and its territories. While they deeply honor AIANTA's foundational legacy, their new name better represents a broader identity.

"The International Inbound Travel Association congratulates the newly named American Indigenous Tourism Association on this important and inspiring evolution,” said Lisa Simon, IITA’s CEO/Executive Director. “This change reflects not only a broader, more inclusive vision, but also the growing recognition of Indigenous tourism as an essential part of the U.S. travel experience. Indigenous cultures and communities are the original storytellers of this land, and their leadership in defining, growing, and sustaining authentic tourism experiences enriches the entire inbound industry. We look forward to continuing our partnership with AITA to ensure international visitors have opportunities to connect with and learn from Indigenous communities across the United States."

Sherry Rupert, CEO of the American Indigenous Tourism Association, is confident that this evolution will enable them to better serve and advocate for all Indigenous tourism operators and communities, fostering economic development and cultural preservation. The mission of the American Indigenous Tourism Association is to define, introduce, grow, and sustain American Indigenous Tourism that honors traditions and values.
