The National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) is reporting on the characteristics of the 10.5 million Canadians who visited the United States by land in 2024.
Key highlights of the Calendar Year 2024 Canadian Overnight Land Visitors to the United States report include:
- Top Source Provinces: Ontario (45.2 percent), Quebec (23.9 percent), and British Columbia (13.3 percent)
- Top U.S. States Visited: New York (3.1 million), Washington (1.2 million), Florida (984K), Michigan (678K), and Maine (639K)
- Top Main Purpose of Trip: Vacation/Holiday (79.2 percent), Visit Friends/Relatives (16.7 percent), and Business (3.1 percent)
- Travel Party Composition: Adults Only (66.3 percent), Adults with Children (33.7 percent)
- 10.5 million Canadian visitors spent 69.7 million nights in the United States, staying an average 6.9 nights in the United States
- Average Number of U.S. States Visited: 2.0
- Top Types of Transportation Used in the United States: Auto, Private or Company (85.2 percent), Rented-Auto (9.7 percent), Air Travel Between U.S. Cities (6.0 percent); Bus Between Cities (5.6 percent), and Walking/Bicycle (5.2 percent)
- Top Leisure Activities Engaged: Sightseeing (41.5 percent), Shopping (32.0 percent), Visit National Parks/Monuments (24.1 percent) and Visit Art Galleries/Museums/Gardens/Zoos (18.0 percent)
- Average Per-Visitor Expenditure in the United States: $855
- Average Annual Household Income: $91,880

- Top Source Provinces: Ontario (43.3 percent), Quebec (15.3 percent), and British Columbia (17.2 percent)
- Top U.S. States Visited: Florida (23.78 percent), California (19.53 percent), Nevada (13.97 percent), New York (11.3 percent)
- Top Main Purpose of Trip: Vacation/Holiday (58.2 percent), Visit Friends/Relatives (19.8 percent), and Business (11.2 percent)
- Travel Party Composition: Adults Only (91.2 percent), Adults with Children (8.8 percent)
- 9.6 million Canadian visitors spent nights in the United States, staying an average of 7.34 nights in the United States
- Average Number of U.S. States Visited: 1.1
- Top Types of Transportation Used in the United States: Ride-sharing Service (38.4 percent), Auto, Private or Company (32 percent), Rented-Auto (24 percent), Taxicab/Limousine (23 percent), City Subway/Tram/Bus (18.7 percent)
- Top Leisure Activities Engaged: Shopping (70.2 percent), Sightseeing (65.6 percent), Experience Fine Dining (28.9 percent), National Parks/Monuments (20.9 percent), Small Towns/Countryside (20.4 percent)
- Average Per-Visitor Expenditure in the United States: $1,699
- Average Annual Household Income: $127,135
