May 2026 Total International Travel Volume to and from the United States

In May 2026, international visitor arrivals to the U.S. increased 2.3 percent from May 2025 to a level of nearly 5.8 million, while outbound travel departures from the United States by U.S. citizens rose 4.2 percent to 9.9 million

Data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) show that in May 2026:

International Arrivals to the United States

• Total non-U.S. resident international visitor volume to the United States of 5,761,256 increased 2.3 percent compared to May 2025.
  • Mexican visitor volume to the United States of 1,661,218 increased 21 percent from May 2025.
  • Canadian visitor volume to the United States of 1,334,774 increased 2.7 percent from May 2025.
  • Overseas visitor volume to the United States of 2,765,264 decreased 6.5 percent from May 2025.
    
    
• The largest number of international visitor arrivals was from Mexico (1,661,218), followed by Canada (1,334,774), the United Kingdom (340,648), India (242,630), and Brazil (162,556). Combined, these top 5 source markets accounted for 66 percent of total international arrivals.
  
  
• The top 5 overseas tourism arrivals in May were the United Kingdom (284,735), India (191,731), Brazil (144,132), Japan (111,354), and Germany (109,682).
  
  
• The top 5 overseas business arrivals in May were the United Kingdom (54,737), India (43,361), Japan (29,701), Germany (27,851), and China (19,676).
  
  
• The top 5 overseas student arrivals in May were China (8,169), India (7,538), South Korea (2,608), Brazil (1,518), and Taiwan (1,515).

International Departures from the United States

• Total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States of 9,871,129 increased 4.2 percent compared to May 2025.
  
  
• Mexico recorded the largest outbound visitor volume of 3,350,393 (33.9 percent of total departures for May). Canada recorded a year-over-year (YOY) increase of 10.5 percent.
  
  
• Europe was the second largest market for outbound U.S. visitors with 2,585,865 departures. This accounted for 26.2 percent of all departures in May. Outbound visitation to Europe in May 2026 increased 2.2 percent compared to May 2025.
  
  
• The YTD market share for North America (Mexico & Canada) was 49.3 percent and overseas was 50.7 percent.
  
  
• Combined YTD, Mexico (17,052,938) and the Caribbean (4,928,115) accounted for 51.2 percent of total U.S. citizen international visitor departures.
