May 2025 Total International Travel Volume to and from the United States

In May 2025, international visitor arrivals to the United States totaled 5,634,382, a decrease of 7% from May 2024.

Outbound travel departures from the United States by U.S. citizens totaled 9,674,868 in May 2025, an increase of 4.5 percent from May 2024.

International Arrivals to the United States
  • Total non-U.S. resident international visitor volume to the United States of 5,634,382, decreased 7 percent compared to May 2024, representing 84 percent of the pre-COVID total visitor volume reported for May 2019.
  • Overseas visitor volume to the United States of 2,958,732 decreased 2.8 percent from May 2024.
  • The largest number of international visitor arrivals was from Mexico (1,392,283), Canada (1,283,367), the United Kingdom (364,071), India (263,108), and Brazil (159,149). Combined, these top 5 source markets accounted for 61.4 percent of total international arrivals.
  • The top 5 overseas tourism arrivals for May were the United Kingdom (312,268), India (212,767), Brazil (141,063), Germany (124,282), and France (113,018).
  • The top 5 overseas business arrivals for May were the United Kingdom (50,636), India (42,944), Germany (29,249), Japan (28,529), and China (17,948).
  • The top 5 overseas student arrivals for May were China (7,658), India (7,397), South Korea (2,473), Brazil (1,564), and Taiwan (1,520).

International Departures from the United States
  • Total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States of 9,674,868 increased 4.5 percent compared to May 2024, representing 113.4 percent of total departures in pre-pandemic May 2019.
  • Mexico recorded the largest outbound visitor volume of 3,357,101 (40.4 percent of total departures for May). Canada recorded a year-over-year (YOY) decrease of 8 percent.
  • Europe was the second largest market for outbound U.S. visitors with 2,529,718 departures in May. This accounted for 26.1 percent of all departures in May. Outbound visitation to Europe in May 2025 increased 6.1 percent compared to May 2024.
  • The year-to-date (YTD) market share for North America (Mexico & Canada) was 49.5 percent and overseas was 50.5 percent.
  • Combined YTD, Mexico (17,120,276) and the Caribbean (5,003,034) accounted for 52.2 percent of total U.S. citizen international visitor departures.
