Outbound travel departures from the United States by U.S. citizens totaled 7,802,295 in January 2026, an increase of 5.8 percent compared to January 2025

Data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) show that in January 2026:

International Arrivals to the United States

  • Total non-U.S. resident international visitor volume to the United States of 5,412,343, decreased 3.5 percent compared to January 2025 and represents 92.7 percent of the pre-COVID total visitor volume reported for January 2019.
  • Overseas visitor volume to the United States of 2,416,502 decreased 4.2 percent from January 2025.
  • The largest number of international visitor arrivals was from Mexico (1,808,555), followed by Canada (1,187,286), the United Kingdom (232,424), Brazil (199,123), and China (159,391). Combined, these top 5 source markets accounted for 66.3 percent of total international arrivals.
  • The top 5 overseas tourism arrivals for January were Brazil (176,338), the United Kingdom (171,001), South Korea (110,189), Japan (104,649), and Argentina (88,582).
  • The top 5 overseas business arrivals for January were the United Kingdom (52,380), India (36,558), Japan (32,710), Germany (27,320), and China (24,301).
  • The top 5 overseas student arrivals for January were China (70,815), India (52,469), South Korea (14,299), Brazil (10,011), and the United Kingdom (9,043).

International Departures from the United States

  • Total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States of 7,802,295 increased 5.8 percent compared to January 2025 and were 120.2 percent of total departures in pre-pandemic January 2019.
  • The market share for North America (Mexico & Canada) was 53.4 percent and overseas was 46.6 percent.
  • Mexico recorded the largest outbound visitor volume of 3,567,509 (45.7 percent of total departures for January). Canada recorded a year-over-year (YOY) decrease of 1.6 percent.
  • Combined, Mexico (3,567,509) and the Caribbean (851,394) accounted for 56.6 percent of total U.S. citizen international visitor departures.
  • Europe was the second largest market for outbound U.S. visitors with 971,828 departures. This accounted for 12.5 percent of all departures in January. Outbound visitation to Europe in January 2026 increased 4.8 percent compared to January 2025.
